Course Description

This course examines the role of materiality, objects, and artifacts in design. Students will explore the properties of different materials and learn how to select and use these materials to create functional and aesthetic objects. Through hands-on experimentation, research, and critical analysis, students will gain a deep understanding of the ways in which materials, objects, and artifacts shape our daily lives. The course will cover a range of topics, including the history of materials and production techniques, sustainable design practices, and the role of objects and artifacts in shaping culture and society. Students will learn how to incorporate design principles such as form, function, and context into their work, as well as how to use different fabrication techniques to bring their designs to life. In addition to technical skills, the course will focus on critical thinking and design analysis, as students learn to evaluate existing objects and artifacts in terms of their cultural and historical significance. Students will also develop effective communication and collaboration skills, working in interdisciplinary teams to create compelling design solutions that address real-world challenges.
